Can employees pick up open shifts?

Employee open-shift pickup requests are not available today. BetterDesks supports scheduler-managed shifts and employee schedule visibility.

Schedulers can create, edit, and assign shifts in BetterDesks. Employees can view the shifts assigned to them, and attendance records connect back to the relevant client, site, and schedule when a match is found.

BetterDesks does not let employees browse open shifts, request shifts, or have a scheduler approve pickup requests from an open-shift queue today. Last-minute coverage is handled by schedulers assigning or updating shifts directly.

BetterDesks does support employee self-scheduled starts when the organization allows them. That is different from open-shift pickup: it lets an employee start unscheduled work by selecting a client and site when no matching shift is found.

Example

A cleaner calls out before an evening shift. The scheduler finds a replacement and updates the shift assignment in BetterDesks. The replacement employee can see the assigned shift and clock in through the normal attendance workflow, but they do not request the shift through an open-shift marketplace.
